Now hiring paramedics

The Department of Emergency Services hires trained paramedics and EMTs to staff its 17 ambulances stationed across the county. DES ambulances are housed at DES headquarters in Hickory, the North Harford EMS station in Pylesville (which also houses special operations equipment) and most volunteer fire companies in the county.

Paramedics and EMTs work a 24/72 schedule.

Hiring process

The first stop is to complete and submit an application. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be asked to come in for a written protocol test, practical exam, physical and interview.

Requirements

All applicants must have a valid Class C driver's license with no more than three points.

Paramedic requirements: must be a Maryland License Advanced Life Support Provider (Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate; Cardiac Rescue Technician; or Certified National Registered Paramedic) with three years of experience as an active EMS provider with current ALS certification. Certification in MFRI Emergency Vehicle Operators Course or MFRI equivalent and certification in Hazmat Awareness are preferred.

EMT requirements: Maryland Emergency Medical Technician certification and two years of experience as an active BLS provider. Certification in MFRI Emergency Vehicle Operators Course or MFRI equivalent and certification in Hazmat Awareness are preferred.
