Forest Conservation and Tree Preservation

Harford County understands the importance of forests within stream valleys. Forests provide shade, habitat for birds, insects, and mammals. Tree roots stabilize soil and take up nutrients. During the design phase of stream restoration projects, forest conservation plans are developed to protect and preserve trees to the maximum extent possible.

How are trees chosen for removal during stream restoration projects?

Existing trees are surveyed and their health is evaluated at the beginning of the design process. As the design proceeds, the stream channel location, the floodplain width, and the limit of disturbance (LOD) are determined.

Specific trees within the LOD are earmarked for removal if:

  1. Trees are leaning and likely to fall
  2. Trees are in poor condition
  3. Trees are a non-native invasive species
  4. Trees are located within the graded area
  5. Trees prohibit the movement of equipment and materials

Wherever possible, trees within or immediately adjacent to the LOD are protected from damage. Some techniques include:

  1. Tree protection planking
  2. Tree root pruning
  3. Vine removal
  4. Construction matting
