[ARCHIVED] Wastewater Overflow in Emmorton Area Found and Promptly Controlled

Employees of the Harford County Department of Public Works observed an overflow of wastewater at a manhole located in the 2500 block of South Tollgate Road at 11:30 am on March 10, 2017. Crews quickly responded to the site and the overflow was controlled by 12:30 pm.  The source of the overflow was determined to be an obstruction of the sewer pipe caused by accumulated grease, wipes and rags.   The sewer line was cleaned and immediately returned to service.

The overflow was estimated to be approximately 300 gallons.  A portion of that flow entered into North Branch, which is a tributary of Winters Run near Bel Air.  Notification was provided to the Harford County Health Department, the Maryland Department of the Environment, and operators of a local water plant.

Although the site has been stabilized and lime applied to the area impacted by the sewage spill, the public is advised to avoid contact with the area and stream.  Signs have been posted to provide notice of the potentially affected area.  These signs will remain in place for approximately ten days.
