About the commission

The Commission on Veterans Affairs consists of up to 16 members. Membership includes veterans from various military services, a county citizen who is an educator from Harford Community College, a county resident appointed by the county council, and a county citizen who owns or operates a local business recommended by the Harford County Chamber of Commerce. Members are appointed by the county executive and confirmed by the county council. The term of each member is coterminous with the county executive.

The commission was created by Harford County Code, Article XII, Section 9-75


Duties

A summary of the commission's duties include:
  • Establish a forum for all Harford County veterans of military services, without regard to race, creed, gender, organizational affiliation, political or economic status
  • Maintain coordinated communication with county and local governments, businesses, and veterans of the county
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and information to the business and academic communities and the government to ensure adequate consideration of veterans in employment, education, training, and public programs
