Harford County Day of Service

Harford County Government employees are invited to participate in the 2022 Day of Service program to honor the life and spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
 

Guidelines:


  • Participation is voluntary.
  • Eligible employees may receive up to 8 hours of administrative leave in exchange for volunteer service at a participating charity.
  • Employees must request administrative leave for their "Day of Service" from their supervisor.
  • Employees must register online and select a volunteer opportunity from the list on this web page (below).  Assignments are not guaranteed, but every effort will be made to accommodate the employee.
  • Participation must be confirmed with the Proof of Participation Form signed by the on-site Volunteer Coordinator and then submitted to their supervisor.
  • Employees who have less than 8 hours of personal leave or less than 40 hours of sick leave are not eligible to participate. Other restrictions apply.

Participating employees will be on administrative leave.  Harford County Government is not responsible for injuries or damages that occur during an employee's use of administrative leave.

Night to Remember
Friday, June 10 | 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Address: Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 1643 Churchville Road, Bel Air
Additional Information: Volunteers needed to decorate dance halls and prepare goodie bags.  The Night to Remember is an annual Gala hosted by Beyond Capernaum at Mt. Zion Church.  At the event, our community celebrates individuals of differing abilities by treating them to an unforgettable, formal ball complete with limo rides, dining, dancing, and games. Volunteers are needed to transform the hall and youth center into extravagant ballrooms for an exciting night to remember.

Harford County I Can Bike Camp
Monday, June 27 to Friday, July 1
Address: Churchville Recreation Center, 3023 Level Road, Churchville
Harford County iCanBike Camp gives individuals with differing abilities, ages eight and over, the opportunity to learn and experience the thrill of riding a bike. Volunteers are needed for 90 minutes the same time each day, Monday through Friday, to spot a child as they learn to ride a bike (7.5 hours total). Wear comfortable shoes and be ready to walk and/or jog as able.

Harford County Second Chance Fair
Wednesday, September 21 | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
Address: Aberdeen Epicenter, 21 Aberdeen Shopping Plaza, Aberdeen
Each year Harford County’s Second Chance Job and Resource Fair offers life-changing opportunities for those who have had past criminal charges or experienced incarceration. The fair helps match employers and resources with individuals who are committed to rebuilding their lives. Volunteers are needed to set up tables and chairs, pass out food, check in guest, pass out refreshments, and assist customers with information and directions.

Harford County Wheelchair Costume Workshop & Inclusive Trick or Treat
Friday, October 28 | 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Address: Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 1643 Churchville Road, Bel Air
For some children who use a wheelchair, dressing up in a costume and trick-or-treating in their neighborhood can be a challenge. Volunteers will work in teams to create one-of-a-kind dream costumes to wrap around children's wheelchairs.  Building, painting, and/or design skills appreciated, but not required.

Invasive/Noxious Weed Removal - Harford County Parks & Recreation
October - Date TBD, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Address: various locations; Eden Mill Nature Center; Emily Bayliss Graham Park; Anita C. Leight Estuary Center and Park
Additional Information: Master gardeners will assist with plant identification and removal techniques.  Note - wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, work boots and gloves.

Holiday Resource Fair
Date/Time: December (Date TBD)
Address: Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 1643 Churchville Road, Bel Air
Additional Information: The Holiday Resource Fair is geared toward connecting families in need to resources for health and wellness, food, rental assistance, housing, energy assistance and more.  Volunteers are needed to help with set up and clean up, man tables, give out food and resources, and assist children with crafts.
